Sealing

Sealing continues to provide a sustainable livelihood for many Inuit, and is a major contributor to local economies. The replacement value of the food from the hunt of ringed seals is estimated at $5 million, and the value of products made from sealskin more than $1.5 million.

More than just an economic necessity, sealing in Nunavut helps maintain a vital source of traditional knowledge for a hunting society, and contributes significantly to the maintenance of a healthy diet among Inuit.

The growing popularity of sealskin products in international markets combines with a humane and sustainable ring seal harvest in Nunavut to support a small but important segment of our economy, one that is rich in tradition, and symbolic of the self-reliance of our people.
