Science and Technology
Science and technology plays a central role in the development of the Nunavut economy. Resource development industries ensure a continuing demand for scientific research, and Nunavut’s climate and geophysical conditions demand innovative approaches in Arctic engineering and technologies in sectors such as mining, construction, energy, and transportation.
The International Polar Year has drawn attention to the role of science and technology in the territory, and will add to research already underway in geoscience, information technology, the fishery, and Inuit traditional knowledge.
Applications of science and technology in Nunavut range from the development of mobile abattoir to support the Southampton Island caribou harvest, to cold weather testing at Iqaluit International Airport by international aerospace companies, such as the recent Airbus A380 cold weather trials.
