Fur and Fashion

Nunavut designers and seamstresses work with premium-quality wild fur to create a synthesis of fashion and function. The local models pictured on this page proudly wear new garments and accessories to promote fur and fashion to our best market, right here in Nunavut.

Fur and skin clothing has been used by Inuit for thousands of years. Survival has depended on the development of extraordinary skills for the production of hand-made clothing that is not only warm, but wind and water proof. Today, these skills, when combined with contemporary design, result in beautiful fur fashions that meet the test of Arctic winters.

While a small part of economy, the creation of fur fashions using local animals helps to sustain traditional ecological knowledge in our land-based culture, while enabling Nunavummiut to engage in the global economy after our own domestic needs are met.
