Business Development

The production by new business enterprises of the goods and services Nunavut needs to support a rapidly growing population and a booming resource industry is one of our greatest economic challenges.

Many in Nunavut are ready to take on this challenge, whether they are Inuit development corporations investing in transportation, fishing, construction or retail businesses, or individual entrepreneurs creating new companies to meet the needs of government and industry.  Since the creation of Nunavut in 1999, the number of businesses in the territory has grown by over 40 per cent, from 640 to 897, and the number of registered Inuit firms has doubled!

Nunavut’s emergence as a new territory has been driven by political will and the efforts of government to create the infrastructure and capabilities we need for future economic growth. It is recognized that now the private sector must play a greater role in the development of the territorial economy, and there is growing cooperation between all levels of government, Inuit organizations, and the business community to make it happen. And business in Nunavut is on the move – in 2005 a territorial record 76 per cent of total investment spending came from the private sector.
