The Department

The Department of Economic Development & Transportation was created in 2004 under the second mandate of the Government of Nunavut.The role of the department is to support the participation of the people of the territory in the development and growth of the Nunavut economy.

Our Mission: The mission of the Department of Economic Development & Transportation is to support the people of Nunavut by building a strong team of public servants who will work in partnership to build the foundations for a strong economy and to ensure the safe and effective movement of people, knowledge and goods throughout the territory.

Our Vision: A strong economy built on a safe, effective transportation system for the benefit of all Nunavummiut.

In addition to its head office in Iqaluit, the department has headquarters’ operations in Kugluktuk, Gjoa Haven, Arviat, Rankin Inlet, and Pangnirtung, and community operations’ offices in Cambridge Bay, Kugluktuk, Rankin Inlet, Pond Inlet, and Cape Dorset.

The department is comprised of 123 employees, working in 14 divisions, organized into three branches.

Corporate Management Branch includes Directorate Division, Finance and Administration Division, Policy, Planning and Communications Division, and the NNI Secretariat.

Economic Development Branch has five divisions: the Community Economic Development Division, Minerals and Petroleum Resources Division, and a Community Operations Division in each region – Kitikmeot, Kivalliq and Qikiqtaaluq.

Four divisions make up the Transportation Branch: Policy and Planning Division, Motor Vehicles Division, Nunavut Airports Division, and the Iqaluit International Airport Division.

Two crown corporations report to the department: the Nunavut Development Corporation, and the Nunavut Business Credit Corporation.

Finally, the department provides direct funding to 18 partner organizations and all 25 Nunavut municipalities to support the delivery of economic development and transportation services throughout the territory.
