Honourable Peter Taptuna 

 

Minister of Economic Development & Transportation

Peter Taptuna was elected to the 3rd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut on October 27, 2008. He represents the Kugluktuk riding, the most western constituency in Nunavut.

On November 19, 2008 Peter was appointed Minister of Economic Development & Transportation. He also serves as Deputy Premier, Minister Responsible for the Nunavut Development Corporation, Minister Responsible for the Nunavut Business Credit Corporation and Minister Responsible for Mines.

Peter was born in Cambridge Bay, but has spent most of his life in Kugluktuk. He attended residential school in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

Peter worked in the oil and gas industry for 13 years, primarily offshore in the Beaufort Sea, where he was part of the first and only Inuit drilling crew.

With the shutdown of the oil and gas sector in the western Arctic, Peter worked at the Lupin Gold Mine southeast of Kugluktuk, and completed an apprenticeship program in heavy duty mechanics, earning journeyman and “Red Seal” certification.

Returning to Kugluktuk, Peter studied at Nunavut Arctic College where he earned a diploma in Management Studies, with a focus on managerial accounting, corporate and contract law, business administration, and human resources management.

From 1999 to 2004, Peter served as a hamlet councilor and deputy mayor for the Hamlet of Kugluktuk. He was a director and chair of the Kitikmeot Corporation from 2000-2008, and served as a director of the Nunavut Development Corporation.

Before becoming a member of the 3rd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, Peter was employed by the Kugluktuk Hunters and Trappers’ Organization from 1999 to 2008.

Peter and his wife Joanne, have been married for over thirty years. Together they raised 5 children: Jason, Cheryl, Genevieve, Ian and Desiree. They have nine grandchildren.

Peter enjoys hunting and camping on the land.
